  • Do not just memorize sayings, recite words, and discuss Zen and the way based on books. The Zen way is not in books.

    Even if you can recite the teachings of the whole canon and all the
    masters and philosophers, they are just useless words of no avail when
    you are facing death.

  • This is similar to the Corinthians verses you quoted earlier. I think it means that no matter what we know in our heads, it’s what we know in our hearts and how we act on what we know in both that is important.

    Catching up:
    Re the certificate from the court. One reason to have these things on your office wall is to assure your clients, not necessarily to show off to them. They say “I’ve done the work and am recognized by those who know.”
